4 Must-Do Tips to Succeed with Local SEO

When it comes to SEO, every effort you make can bring you additional customers. When you’re a local business, that SEO is even more important. But you’ve got to take a different approach from someone who is marketing to the entire nation.

Here are four tips that will ensure you rise to the top of local searches.

1. Use City Keywords

If you’re a Vancouver-based bakery, make sure you’re using “Vancouver” in every keyword phrase you use on your website. It’s not enough to say you’re a Canadian bakery. When people search for “Vancouver bakery,” they want to find you.

2. Include Your Neighborhood

Go one step further with your location efforts and mention the neighborhood(s) you serve. Some people look for hyperlocal businesses in their immediate area, so by using those neighborhoods in your search engine optimization, you’ll capture those customers and send them your way.

3. Get Listed in Directories

Your website isn’t the only place you can garner SEO. Make sure you’ve updated your Yelp listing, as well as other review sites and business directories for your city or neighborhood. These will help people find you through other channels, as long as there is a link back to your site.

4. Use General Good SEO

Beyond the first three tips, ensure you’re following proper SEO protocol. Update your content regularly (your blog is good for that), and refresh those keywords if they’re not driving the traffic you want to your store. Use 1-2 keywords per page, and don’t overload them in the copy. Pay attention to how Google changes what it looks at to rank a website, and tweak your content accordingly.
